Mission: Behave at Home

Instilling good behavior in a child begins at home, but helping a child internalize what it means to behave well can be a difficult task.

That's where Characters of Character comes in.  Or rather, Behavior Bear.  Behavior Bear was created to help children connect with what it means to behave.  Designed to help children build a firm foundation of what it means to have good behavior, Behavior Bear is a super hero you can rely on.

So, what does Behavior Bear say when it comes to behaving at home?

- Listen
- Stay calm (don't throw tantrums; it's okay to walk away and take a few deep breaths if you're feeling overwhelmed)
- Respect your surroundings
- Be kind to those around you (pets included!)
- Use your manners (please & thank you go a long way!)

It's up to you to set the standard for what it means to behave at home.  Create your own rules, reward positive behavior, and encourage growth! Everyone has slip ups, so be sure to use those experiences as teaching moments with your kids.  Acknowledge, apologize, and try to encourage your kids to make better decisions in the future.

Five Platforms To Enhance Character Building

teaching character at an early ageDid you know that Characters of Character focuses on instilling positive character traits at a younger age because we believe that introducing these traits at an earlier age will create a better-quality society.

We've created nine different Characters, each one correlating with a different trait, as a unique way to reach children and help them internalize positive attributes.

In addition to our nine Characters (Behavior Bear, Do'er Duck, Friendship Frog, Healthy Hippo, Manners Monkey, Respectful Rabbit, Responsible Rabbit, Self-Esteem Elephant, and Warm-Hearted Walrus), we incorporate what we call the 'Five Platforms'.  While instilling positive attributes in children, they are also learning how to make better decisions, reading, writing, social skills, and fine motor skills.

10 Rainy Day Activities

character education elementary age

During the summer, entertaining your children to prevent boredom can be quite the task.  Now, imagine living in regions where the rain is unpredictable and inevitable.  What do you do to entertain your children when you've got not choice but to stay indoors?

Here at Characters of Character, we've compiled a list of 10 brilliant ideas to keep your kids entertained during a rainy day!

Teaching children character early age

1) Read a story  Don't take a good book for granted.  Not only is this a great way to pass the time, but it can also be a great way to open a discussion to a topic you've been meaning to talk to your children (or students) about.  Characters of Character has a great selection of books available on Amazon.

2) Write a letter Do you remember how exciting it was to receive a letter in the mail before the only thing you received were bills?  Writing to others will encourage friendly behavior.  Be sure to continue to encourage writing letters, whether it be to a grandparent, friend, or pen-pal, once the rain passes.

3) Color If you don't have coloring books on hand, Characters of Character offers free printable color pages.

4) Build a fort Forts allow children to use their imagination in ways that adults forget to utilize.  You don't need anything additional for this fun rainy day activity -- just use whatever you have around your home!

5)Activity Book  Whether it's coloring, word searches, or mad libs, a good ol' fashioned activity book is always great to have on hand.

6) Write a song We know.  The idea of encouraging your child to make music while you're stuck inside on a rainy day probably doesn't sound like the best decision.  The good news is, you can use it as a learning experience.  If your child (or children) get too rowdy it would be a good opportunity to use it a teaching lesson about respecting others.

7) Cook a meal Whether you're whipping up a multi-generational family recipe or finding something new on Pinterest, memories like cooking with your children are ones that are sure to be cherished.  Be sure to let them help as much as possible - from mixing ingredients to cleaning up (whatever their age is appropriate for, of course! Safety first!)

8) Paint Characters of Character has released painting kits for each of our nine Characters!  The kit includes everything you'll need to create your very own Character painting, each featuring a positively awesome message.  Best part? You're supporting Characters of Character with each purchase.  Makes a great gift idea come the holiday season for teachers, parents, grandkids, and everyone in between!  Do'er Duck Painting Kit is available here.

9) Have a photoshoot We live in a world where people associate pictures with narcism, but I beg to differ.  Marking memories with photos is something that will be cherished for years to come.  Don't just sit behind the screen taking silly selfies, switch it up!  Grab some old clothes or makeup and really glam up your photoshoot and let loose.  These days with them being young won't last forever & you'll be thankful for those silly photos someday.

10) Listen to a story podcast Remember the film A Christmas Story where the family gathers round the radio to listen to the radio show?  Think of a podcast as the modern A Christmas Story scene.  Your children will need to be more engaged to pay attention and it would be a great way to test their attention span by asking questions after the story ends.

We hope you enjoyed our list of 10 rainy day activities! Be sure to head over to CharactersofCharacter.org for more information.
